Game 4:
August 27th: Laingsburg 1 – Durand 1
Laingsburg/Bath
visited Durand for both teams
5th match of the season. Laingsburg’s Dalton
Guggemos
was awarded a penalty kick at the 32 minute mark and made the PK for
the 1-0
Wolfpack lead. This seemed to fire Wolfpack up as they began to
play
hard, aggressive soccer consistently for the 1st time this
year and
held Durand to 8 shots for the game and the 1-0 halftime lead.
The 2nd
period started with the same kind of aggressive approach by the
Wolfpack as
they continually controlled possession and peppered shots at the Durand
Goalkeeper. Durand’s Kyle Wilhelmi kept his team in the game as
he made
14 saves in the game on 17 shots by Laingsburg. With Kyle keeping
his
team in the game, Durand’s Trevor Montroy kept working the right
sideline and
in the 24th minute picked up a rebound in the scramble in

continued to pressure Durands keeper and had several nice crosses in
the final minutes

Game 5: September
2nd: Laingsburg 1 – Linden 1
Laingsburg/Bath
went on the road for the their 5th
straight match versus the undefeated Linden Eagles. The game
started with
both teams fighting for possession in the mid-field and neither team
able to
dominate ball possession. Linden consistently tried to overlap on
the
outside and Laingsburg managed to generate several odd-man
rushes. Twenty
Nine minutes into the match, it was Linden's Brad Farthing picking up a
rebound
for the 1-0 Eagle lead. Laingsburg was able to generate pressure
very
late in the period and with 10 seconds left, the Wolfpack's Dalton
Guggemos
ripped a 15 yard shot from the right side that was knocked down by the
Eagles
Zach Steele. In the ensuing scramble in front of the net, an
Eagle
defender knocked the ball down with this arm and the Wolfpack was
awarded the
penalty kick with .06 on the clock. Laingsburg's John Brown
buried the
PK.
The second
period saw both sides getting good
oppurtunities but neither side was able to convert. Laingsburg
had to shuffle
their defense after Chase Stambersky went down with an ankle injury and
the
back four of Eric Silvernail, Ryan Hannah, Caleb Gutzki and Nick Jarvis
harassed and delayed the Eagle attack, while GoalKeeper Ben Roberts
made
several critical saves. The game ended 1-1

played at home for the first time since
August mid August and came away with a 3-0 victory over Onsted.

slow
down the home team. Laingsburg controlled possession the entire
first
half and went into half with a 2-0 lead and limiting Onsted to one shot
on
goal. The 'Pack's Ryan Hannah opened the scoring with a
well-played ball
from the John Brown's corner, that Ryan struck with his head a full 2
feet above the defender and goalkeeper. John
Brown scored
the 2nd goal of the game nine minutes later from the quick passing of
Mitchell
Matzenbach and Matt Johnson. John Brown finished the socre 6

Game 8 : September
11th: Laingsburg 3 – Ovid-Elsie
The Wolfpack
hosted Ovid-Elsie for their 1st match
against each other this season. The game started rather slow as
both
teams were feeling each other out. O-E's Keifer Hall was able to
make two
early breaks in behind the Laingsburg defense but came up empty.
Laingsburg's John Brown scored the first goal of the game at the 3
minute mark
as he put in a goal from 5 yds off the Matt Johnson pass. Laingsburg
was
controlling possession and the flow of the game but occasionally
Ovid-Elsie's
Keifer Hall would break free and attempt a run on goal.. At the 26
minute mark,
it paid off as Keifer was able to draw a penalty on the Laingsburg
Sweeper Eric
Silvernail. Philip Ching made the penalty kick to tie the
game. From that point, the rest of the game
was in
control of the Wolfpack as Ovid-Elsie did not generate a shot on goal
for the
rest of the half. Laingsburg kept the ball in their attacking
half and
moved the ball well from side to side and in the 24th minute, John
Brown
tallied his second goal of the game off the Dalton Guggemos
assist. Ten
minutes later, it was John Brown for his third goal of the quick
passing of
Mitchell Matzenbach and Dalton Guggemos for the 3-1 halftime
lead. The
second period saw the ball almost exclusively in possession of the
Wolfpack as
they controlled the play and flow of the game and moved the ball
well.
Laingsburg did not score again but they were able to work on their
control and
passing and were able to rotate most of their players into the game and
limit
Ovid-Elsie to 2 shots on goal in the second half, both of which came
when
Laingsburg was playing a man down.

The Aggies had
a large and loud home crowd as they

they
scored their first goal 18 seconds into the match, when Dalton Guggemos
picked
up the rebound from the John Brown strike and put it past the Aggie
keeper. The Aggies responded well and outhustled the Wolfpack
during the
next five minutes of the match, however, it was the ‘Pack’s
Jordan Fulton
who knocked over the Aggie keeper in the scramble in front of the net
and
scored the second goal. Dalton Guggemos tallied two more goals
for the
Wolfpack in the 1st period for his hat trick and the
Wolfpack’s 4-0
lead at intermission. Ryan Hannah and Matt Johnson assisted on
Guggemos’s
2nd and 3rd goal, respectively.
In the second
period, Wolfpack sophomore Drew Jones
saw his first action of the year in goal for the Wolfpack varsity and
held onto
the shutout with one saves as the Wolfpack tallied two more goals for
the final

left in the half, Laingsburg's Ryan Hannah sent a long ball in from
midfield that John Brown buried for the go-ahead goal and the 2-1

Laingsburg-Bath
claims first soccer district
By COREY RHODES,

OWOSSO
- It took the Laingsburg-Bath soccer team more than a decade to reach a
district championship game, and once it got there, the Wolfpack didn't
want to leave.
For a while it seemed like the 'Pack wouldn't.
It
took nearly two complete overtime periods Friday to decide who would be
the Division 2 district champion between the Wolfpack and St. Johns
(14-7-2) - but a Mitchell Matzenbach header gave Laingsburg-Bath the
2-1 win with just 3:09 left in the second OT.
“In this district
we kept telling ourselves ‘stay alive, it's never gonna be our last
game' and that's our mindset each and every game,” said senior John
Brown, whose corner kick set up the game-winning goal. “We carried it
out all the way through to the end and that's what saved us in the end
and we were able to win.”
The district championship was a
perfect measuring stick for how far the Wolfpack (14-5-2) has come this
season. In the opening game of the year, St. Johns posted a 4-1 win
over Laingsburg-Bath.
This time, the Redwings
took a 1-0 lead on a penalty kick by Ian Baert with 7:28 left in the
first half at Willman Field.
But
with some adjustments on defense, a brilliant game by goalkeeper Ben
Roberts and tremendous hustle, Laingsburg-Bath scraped out a win simply
by playing the only way it knows how.
“That's really Laingsburg
soccer,” said coach Shawn Fulton. “That's the kind of soccer I've tried
to instill in these boys and I think we didn't really play that way in
the first two games. But we have had tremendous success on our home
field and at halftime we took it to heart that we were the home team
and this was our home field and nobody is gonna push us around on our
home field. Win, lose or draw they're gonna know they're in a game and
that's what the team's whole point was.”
The Wolfpack applied
tremendous pressure on the offensive end throughout the game, but
didn't break through with a goal until just 15:34 remained in the game.
Ryan Bray found the upper right corner of the net from about 15 yards
off a scramble in front of the St. Johns net.
“Once we got that
first goal I think momentum clearly shifted and we were out-playing
them and had them on their heels and knew we had a really good chance
to win,” Brown said.
For the final 20 minutes of regulation, the Wolfpack dominated
possession of the ball and carried that over into the overtime.
“They just out-hustled us,
that's really the bottom line,” said St. Johns coach Karl Hanover.
“They played better than we did.”
Both
teams had chances early in overtime to end the game. Laingsburg-Bath
couldn't convert on a scramble in front of the net and St. Johns had a
shot ring off the crossbar and down in front of the net.
St.
Johns also had several opportunities to break the game open well before
any thought of overtime. But a handful of tremendous saves from
Roberts, who was nearly a unanimous selection for the All-District
team, kept Laingsburg-Bath alive.
“I was hoping to try and keep
my team in the game and just kind of stop their shots,” Roberts said.
“Last time we played them they had a lot of outside shots so I tried to
get in position so I could stop them and keep us in the game.”
Roberts
wasn't in goal the first time these teams met, because he wasn't the
team's goalie to start the season. But after the team allowed seven
goals during its first two losses, Roberts volunteered for the role and
has been a gem ever since, allowing less than a goal per game for the
entire season.
“In my opinion, he was the best goalie in this
district and, in my opinion, he's probably the most valuable player on
this team,” Fulton said.
Roberts' presence wasn't limited to the
championship game, as he also had a tremendous impact during the
semifinal match against Clio.
“It was the same thing Wednesday
night, if he hadn't made a couple great saves before the half we
wouldn't have come back,” Fulton said.
Now,
the Wolfpack has the chance to step into uncharted territory as it
heads to the first game of regionals Tuesday at Flint Kearsley against
the winner between North Branch and Oxford.
“I don't think
there's a team out thereI mean we'll show up and play our butts off,”
Fulton said. “I'm not afraid of anyone, if we play like this there's
not a team in the state I'm afraid of.
“If we play like this, all it takes is one goal.”
For at least one day however, the team will enjoy what it has already
accomplished.
“It feels great,” said Roberts, “because we've done something that no
one else has done in our school before.”

Laingsburg-Bath advances to soccer regional

LAINGSBURG
- The Laingsburg-Bath soccer team advanced to this week's regional
competition for the first time and the Wolfpack could have a solid shot
to advance to the regional final in Division 2.
Laingsburg-Bath,
which beat St. Johns 2-1 in double overtime Friday, drew the winner of
the St. Clair district for its regional semifinal at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Oxford advanced out of that district with a 1-0 win over North Branch.
Oxford's
Corey Olsen scored the only goal of the game as Tim Bachner collected
the shutout in goal. The Wildcats (9-10-3) won three district games to
reach the regional.
Laingsburg-Bath (14-5-2) has not played any
of the three regional finalists this season. Sixth-ranked Mason plays
unranked Ortonville Brandon in the other half of the draw late Tuesday
night at Flint Kearsley.
The championship game is Thursday at 7 p.m., also at Kearsley.
Laingsburg-Bath
coach Shawn Fulton likes the way his team played in the district and
believes it will give anyone a tough game in the regional if it plays
the same way.
“I don't think there's a team out thereI mean,
we'll show up and play our butts off. I'm not afraid of anyone,” Fulton
said after the district championship. “If we play like this, there's
not a team in the state I'm afraid of. If we play like this, all it
takes is one goal.”
Laingsburg-Bath played an independent schedules this season.
Oxford
is playing in the regional for the fifth time in seven years, but the
first time since 2006. Oxford finished fourth in the Metro League
behind Brandon, Fenton and Linden.
In the other half of the draw
Mason plays Brandon (16-5-2). Brandon won its first district
championship in nine years and its first Metro title in 15 seasons.
Brandon
coach Phil Kimmel is in his second season. He formerly played on three
straight district championship teams for the Blackhawks (1997-99).
Brandon advanced to the
regional by shutting out Fenton 5-0 in the district championship.
Mason
was ranked sixth in the final coaches' association poll. The Bulldogs,
members of the Capital Area Activities Conference Red with Owosso, beat
DeWitt 4-1 in the district championship Saturday at East Lansing.
Mason reached the district final by beating ninth-ranked East Lansing
5-2 Thursday night.
The Bulldogs won the CAAC Red this season with Owosso finishing second.

Laingsburg-Bath
wins first regional contest in school history

FLINT - It was history in
the making for Laingsburg-Bath's soccer squad.
The
Wolfpack captured its first-ever victory in regional action by nipping
Oxford 1-0 on a cold Tuesday afternoon at Flint Kearsley High School.
Now the Wolfpack (15-5-2) will aim for the school's first regional
championship Thursday at 7 p.m.
“Laingsburg-Bath
has never gotten this far,” said senior defenseman Eric Silvernail.
“It's monumental. This is a big step for our program. We've never made
it this far.”
The Wolfpack will be a decided underdog when it
takes a five-game winning streak against No. 6-ranked Mason in the
finals. The Bulldogs (21-2) defeated Ortonville Brandon 1-0 in
Tuesday's other regional semifinal.
“We have nothing to lose at
this point - we're deeper than anybody expected us to be,” said
Laingsburg-Bath coach Shawn Fulton.
Oxford
(9-11-3) had twice as many shots on goal as the Wolfpack. The Wildcats
owned a 10-5 advantage. But Wolfpack senior forward John Brown scored
the game's lone goal - his 25th of the season - with 5:39 left in the
first half.
Brown's goal came off a rebound on a play triggered
by Matt Johnson's crossing pass from the left corner. It appeared an
Oxford defender would clear the ball but Jordan Fulton was able to keep
the ball alive and Brown then got it past the keeper.
“If you
could give an assist on hustle, I'd give it to Jordan Fulton on that
play,” said Shawn Fulton. “He came in on that first ball across and he
got a touch on that ball and spun it out and John finished it. Jordan
was just pure hustle up top to get in there and get a touch on that
ball.”
Johnson and Fulton each had assists on the play and
Johnson tied the school record for most assists in a season with 22. He
now shares the mark with Chris Martinez.
“This is amazing,” said Johnson. “It's a really cool feeling knowing
that we're the only team to ever go this far in soccer.”
With
the 1-0 lead to protect and the strong wind at its back, the
Laingsburg-Bath defense tightened the screws in the second half and
keeper Ben Roberts, who made seven saves, made sure no shots got past
him.
“Defense is one of our stronger points,” said Hannah. “If the other
team doesn't score then they can't win.”
One
of the defensive gems of the contest came from Silvernail, who made a
non-goalie save with 15 minutes left in the first half.
“I slid for it and I was lucky to get it,” said Silvernail. “If I
didn't get it, it would have been a sure goal.”
“We
made a mistake there and it was Eric Silvernail who came in and cleared
that ball out,” said Fulton. “He's always solid, he's always in the
right spot. He's not flashy but he's just a solid player back there.”
Oxford coach John Thaler said his team has stepped up especially strong
the past four or five games.
“We
had our schedule stacked with Division 1 teams throughout the year just
to get us ready for this,” said Thaler. “We played well at the
districts. And I don't know if we ran out of gas after the district
final on Saturday or what. It just wasn't our game ... But nobody
expected us to get this far.”
Mason edged Brandon by the same
1-0 score as Dagan Hammar scored with 26:14 left in the second half to
set up Thursday's regional final clash with Laingsburg-Bath.
Laingsburg-Bath
matched last year's win total. The Wolfpack finished 15-3-1 a season
ago. But the squad lost 2-1 in the first round of the districts to
DeWitt.
“We sort of got thrown to the Wolves last year. It was
our first year in Division 2 and we're quite a small school actually,”
said Fulton. “And when we went into DeWitt, we lost 2-1. We didn't
really control the ball but we didn't give up too many shots and we
actually scored first.”
Prior to the Mason-Brandon late semifinal, Fulton said one goal could
be the difference Thursday.
“All
it takes is one goal,” said Fulton. “If we can keep it tight - our
defense is pretty strong - one goal is all we need. I've got a couple
of good horses up front. It'll be the biggest challenge that our
program has ever faced.”
Laingsburg/Bath
is 15-5-2 on the season play in the Region 7 Final at Flint Kearsley on
10/23 @ 7:00pm versus Mason . Mason defeated Ortonville Brandon 1-0 in
the night cap.

Goal with 8:37 left snaps 1-1 tie,

FLINT - Ian Milligan scored the game
winning goal with 8:37 remaining as Laingsburg/Bath defeated Mason 2-1
in a Division 2 regional final Thursday night at Kearsley High
That was an amazing feeling and a huge
victory for our team,"
Milligan said. "We knew how good of a team Mason is, but we remained
confident throughout the game."
Laingsburg/Bath
advances to the state semifinals at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Bloomfield
Hills Andover against Saturday's winner between Birmingham Seaholm and
Dexter.
Laingsburg/Bath entered the second half
trailing 1-0 as
Mason's Ryan Thelen scored with just over two minutes remaining before
halftime on a pass from teammate Dagan Hammar.
The Bulldogs
(20-2-2) dominated possession for the majority of the first half, but
Laingsburg/Bath came out in the second half and made the necessary
adjustments to battle back..
"We knew that Mason had a ton of
team speed and our goal was to contain that speed and not allow them to
get any easy shots on goal," Laingsburg/Bath coach Shawn Fulton said.
"We knew we had them frustrated and that is a credit to our defense.
They did an outstanding job for us out there tonight."
Fulton
spoke to his team before the game about schemes to stop Mason's
high-powered offense and assigned senior defender Rysam Hurley the task
of shadowing Mason's Dagan Hammar and making sure that he did not get
any open looks.
Hurley answered the challenge as he
helped hold
Mason's top goal scorer scoreless throughout the game, despite the
Bulldogs controlling possession for much of the game.
"They (Laingsburg/Bath) had a game plan
coming into this game and they executed it to perfection," Mason coach
Nick Binder said.
"They took over the momentum in the
second half and we just got a little too impatient."
Laingsburg/Bath opened the second half
with an unassisted goal by senior John Brown, which tied the game at
1-1.
The
game turned into a defense battle following the goal, highlighted by a
number of key saves by Laingsburg/Bath goalie Ben Roberts.
"Ben made some incredible saves out there
that really kept us in the game and put us in position to win," Fulton
said.
"This is a complete team effort and I was
extremely proud of our team today. They really deserved this victory."
Laingsburg-Bath upsets Mason to win
regional
By JEROME MURPHY,
Argus-Press Sports Writer - http://www.argus-press.com/

FLINT - Laingsburg-Bath
made the impossible happen.
The
Wolfpack, after being held without a shot on goal in the first half,
scored twice in the second half to stun No. 6-ranked Mason 2-1 and
claim the program's - and area's - first regional soccer championship
Thursday at Flint Kears-ley High School.
Mason (20-2-2) dominated the first half, out-shooting the Wolves 7-0.
Unranked
Laingsburg-Bath (16-5-2) earned a berth in Wednesday's Division 2 state
semifinals at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Bloomfield Hills Andover. Coach Shawn
Fulton's Wolves will battle the winner of Saturday's Division 2 Andover
regional final pitting eighth-ranked Birmingham Seaholm against
unranked Dexter.
In the final stats, the Bulldogs took 10 shots
on goal to Laingsburg-Bath's four but the Wolfpack made more of its
opportunities.
“They
put a lot of pressure on us but our defense doesn't give up that many
clean shots,” said Laingsburg-Bath coach Shawn Fulton.
The game
was tied 1-1 late in regulation before sophomore midfielder Ian
Milligan delivered the game-winner - scoring just his second goal of
the season - with 8:35 left. The assist was credited to Lucas Rocha and
the Wolfpack held on for the upset victory.
“Luas Rocha dribbled
it around for a while and then he passed back and I happened to be
there,” Mil-ligan said while posing with the regional trophy. “A little
luck and a lot of heart. This is pretty amazing.”
Moments after the final seconds ticked off, the Laingsburg-Bath student
section ran onto the field and mobbed the team.
At
the same time members of the Mason squad dropped to the turf and held
their heads in disbelief. Mason has won seven consecutive district
championships but just one regional - in 2005.
Laingsburg-Bath
senior forward John Brown, who tied the game at 1-1 10 minutes into the
second half, said it was an upset victory that was shocking - even to
the Wolfpack.
“I've got to hand it to
Mason,” said Brown. “They are a talented team and nine times out of 10
they beat us.”
But not Thursday.
Goaltender Ben Roberts made nine saves and he had plenty of help from
his swarming teammates.
“I
figured that throughout the full game there'd probably be only one
goal,” said Roberts. “And I was really down on myself after they got
that first goal. But when we scored we felt really good about ourselves.
“The plan now is to go as far as our winning streak takes us. We'd love
to go all the way.”
Mason
forced the action in the first half and it finally paid off with 2:21
left before intermission. Steven Walker scored on a deflection off the
leg of a Laingsburg defenseman and past Roberts for a 1-0 lead.
At
halftime, Fulton reminded his team of its district championship victory
over St. Johns, a 2-1 double-overtime win in much the same fashion as
Thursday's.
“Our district final was exactly the same way,” said
Fulton. “We were down 1-0 at halftime and St. Johns had been putting a
lot of pressure on but we were playing our game. We were not giving up
a lot of shots and we knew we could come back. We knew we had Mason
extremely frustrated.”
With 30
minutes left in the contest, senior Ryan Hannah unleashed a long, high
free kick that landed among a scrum in front of the Mason net and Brown
was able to retrieve the ball and score from the corner.
“We
just thought, get it in, try to get a flick on the ball and one of our
players got his head on it (Mitch Matzenbach) and I was able to follow
up behind the play,” said Brown. “I had no angle. I just shot it at the
net and it went off his leg (of the Mason goalkeeper) and in.”
“Hannah brought it in from the outside and we just crashed everybody on
the goal,” said Fulton.
Fulton
said Laingsburg-Bath senior Rysam Hurley played an exceptional
defensive game to limit the offensive threat posed by Mason senior
Dagan Hammar.
Hammar had a hat trick in a district semifinal win
over East Lansing and also scored Mason's game-winner in a 1-0 regional
semifinal win over Ortonville Brandon.
“He's a big guy for them but Rysam stayed right on his shoulder and he
hardly got any touches tonight. That was a real key.”
